Sexual assault of the calm voice in the dark

The Christmas Party Incident –

(The first incident of two, Sexual Battery)

So, I will preface this with saying, until I was interviewed by Investigative Services detectives, I didn’t realize this was even a sexual battery or what that meant.

Definition of Sexual Battery

Sexual battery is defined as the unlawful and intentional touching of another person in a sexual manner without their consent. This can include a range of actions, such as unwanted touching, fondling, or any other form of sexual contact that occurs against the victim’s will.

December 2018-

Every year our agency in different areas, has a work Christmas party. Some people go some do not. A lot of more senior people don’t go because as they put it, ” it causes too much drama”. I also think morale in the department plays a role in this as well.

Being as I had only been on the department about a year; I was excited to go. This was my dream job and dream agency and I was really excited. When I got hired, they used the term, ” you bleed blue and gold”. Meaning that I resonated so much, so highly with my job and the department that I bled the colors that represented us. So, for me that is just a testament to how excited I was to go to events or be a part of everything the department did or had to offer.

The Christmas party that year was scheduled at night. And it was winter, so it was already dark when we all started to show up. We had quite a few people that showed up, not just from the office I worked at but surrounding offices that I dispatched for. It was exciting to get to meet officers that I worked with every day, male and female but had never met face to face.

The night started with a sit-down dinner and then we had drinks and just comingled. At one point I saw a female officer who I absolutely loved there. I had met her once before when I was invited over to another officer and his wife’s home for dinner. I was so excited to see her, so I went to say hello. I had known that this female officer was dating a male officer who worked at the office I dispatched for but really thought nothing of it. I didn’t really like this male officer because he was arrogant and argumentative with everyone he met and very demeaning towards women. Either way, it didn’t affect my opinion on her or change the fact that I was excited to see her.

I went up to her and gave her a hug and said hello and we were catching up talking. As we were talking the male officer (the perpetrator in my story) snuck up behind her without us knowing he was there. He then grabbed the female officers’ hand and placed it on my left breast. He proceeded to push her hand against me and laughed. After that he ran off. She immediately pulled her hand back and said, “I am so so sorry hes such a dick”. To which I stated ” yeah, he is”.

At the time I was uncomfortable and didn’t understand why he had done that. A couple months prior he had tried to send me a message on snapchat and it was very vulgar making comments about my chest. I had ignored it at that point because it was disgusting. Not like when a male is just hitting on you or giving you a compliment. It was degrading and very vulgar towards me. I was immediately put off by this and also upset since I loved and had respect for this female officer he was dating and thought it was wrong he even messaged me like that.

Now mind you, when the 2nd incident, sexual assault was reported to ISU (Investigative services unit) I didn’t really know how this played a part in my story until I was asked if I had any other run ins with him besides the main attack in dispatch. That is when this came up and his degrading comments on snap chat. This 1st and 2nd assault happened so many years prior to the report (May 2023) that I was scared the female officer may not remember or may not tell the truth about the Christmas party incident. The reason I was so worried was because the incident in dispatch had no witnesses, but the Christmas party there was a witness, this female officer. I knew that my allegations were the truth, but I had no physical evidence, no DNA, no witness. Which now I recognize is why the perpetrator did what he did and where he did it.

When I did receive the police report in January 2024, I was overcome with emotions when I saw that the female officer not only told the truth but said, “I could see him (the perpetrator) doing this”. He was fully capable of doing this to me and she was crying when she found out why she was being interviewed in the first place.

I will continue to write different posts about the incidents and the aftermath, the reporting of what happened, how this all came out and what is happening now legally and with my retirement in future posts.

About

I became a 911 dispatcher in 2017. I had dreamt about this job and knew I was born to do it. Through so many trials and tribulations, I made it through them all. But one thing I did not triumph over, not yet anyways, was a sexual assault by an officer, someone I should have been able to trust.
